You do not have to be naked! | The Swan Boudoir Studio by Tara Starr Photography

Hi everyone! So as a boudoir portrait photographer I often hear "I could never take naked pictures!" Well let me tell you something....YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE NAKED!! (Or even in underwear for that matter!)

When I first started shooting boudoir portraits I didn't really put much thought into what people were wearing. I think I just figured they would show up in whatever they wanted to be photographed in and it was my job to take the pictures. After years of experience now I have learned so much about guiding woman to feel their most confident and sexy self! With very detailed conversations prior to the day of shooting we really plan out everything together. I know exactly what works best in my studio as far as colors and textures and most importantly I know that you do not have to be naked to feel sexy. (But if you want to then YOU GO GIRL!) But through the planning process we learn that what makes all the difference in the images is NOT the clothes!! I mean avoiding the wrong outfits is key, but in the end what makes the final images 1000% sexy is the confidence that comes through. You could be sporting jeans and a tee shirt, but when a woman FEELS sexy everyone around her knows it and THAT is what we are creating!!

From the amazing professional hair and makeup services to being coached through poses with laughter in a welcoming supportive atmosphere feeling gorgeous and confident in your own skin just exudes out of you! I have been told that during the process it's like another woman takes over your body and it becomes the most empowering experience my clients have ever had!

So being naked, half naked or wearing a snow suit really isn't what its about. It's about being made to FEEL beautiful with who you are at this exact moment in your life! Now that being said I have quite often been told "I took off much more than I planned!" Just a fair warning! Hehehe.....

Here are some examples of the same ladies in different looks. I think they look just as sexy in both styles! We want you to leave your comfort zone a little with a session like this but we never want you to go any further than you really want to. And here is proof that you just don't have to!

This gorgeous gal was in the studio recently and WOWZERS!! What fun we had! I love being part of a surprise for the hubby!
Needless to say he loved his album we created for him! I always say the end result, the final images, will always make an amazing gift for that special someone but the experience is for YOU! Coming in and getting totally pampered by my amazing hair and makeup team gets my swans feeling like they can walk the runway along side any supermodel! Then we ease into posing and being totally coached every step of the way just puts everyone at ease. The nerves disappear and the photo session becomes this empowering experience that you will remember forever! I absolutely LOVE my part in all of it! Seeing the confidence just ooze out of these gorgeous woman is the best part of the entire process!

Our latest Talking Swan! What an amazing day we had with this beautiful lady. Zabella Rouge- Makeup by Izabelle was there to provide her magical makeup experience! This was the first time I got to meet Katie face to face after chatting for a while on facebook. I knew she was nervous but she totally rocked her session!! When asked about her time at the Swan she had this to say she had this to say- "This was the most empowering experience I have ever had! Tara and Izabelle made me feel so comfortable!" The best part for me was getting to watch Katie see her final images. She was so excited to see them and keep asking for a sneak peak but I had to tell her the absolute best part about what I do is getting to be there when my clients view the final images. It is just so rewarding getting to watch everyone see themselves in a different light. As beautiful, strong woman outside of their day to day selves. I just can't say enough how I love getting to be a part of all of this!

A huge perk in my business is getting to make friends, real friends who I meet only because I am commissioned to take pictures. It's pretty amazing. I get to be one of the first people to hold someone's precious new baby, or get sweet toddler hugs, play a part in celebrating birthdays, communions, graduations, weddings, and of course shooting a boudoir session when the woman might feel the most vulnerable she has ever felt in her life (at the start of the session anyway)....and all of this being possibly the first time we have met each other face to face! I mean after playing a part in these rare times in people's lives and new experiences I can't imagine not keeping in contact with them afterwards! Really connecting with new people is just awesome!

The flip side to this is when I get to work with old friends. And I mean really old friends. Friend that shape your childhood. Friends that have a bond so strong that no matter how many years pass nothing can break the connection. That's exactly how I feel about this beautiful gal! We became joined at the hip at about 11 years old. As we got older and in the time before facebook we went in 2 different directions but that will never matter. Thanks to facebook and her finally moving back to Massachusetts this session got to happen! My second time actually photographing her but the first one was a much less intimate portrait session!

She may be my most "plain Jane" friend and self described "jeans and tee shirt girl" so I knew the transformation when getting her all glammed up was going to be so much fun!

Here is what she had to say about the experience: "I've never viewed myself as beautiful, cute at best. I always struggled with my weight and then went through major weight loss and still struggled with seeing the new me, I will always see myself 100% heavier than I am. This session allowed me to step back and see the real me I am today. After viewing the pictures with my husband that night he kept saying how he is married to an underwear model. It was really fun to have him see me differently as well."

Another amazing boudoir model from our model call event! We had so much fun! Awesome outfits and lots of laughs!

Here is what this gorgeous gal had to say about her experience at The Swan: "Since I can remember I have struggled with body image dysmorphia and confidence, although nobody would ever believe it if they knew me. Coming into the photo session I was terrified, but Immediately stepping into the studio, surrounded by all the women, I loosened up. (To the point I was walking around with my butt cut-out underwear on even while not in front of the camera) This was such an uplifting, empowering experience that I believe every women should have the opportunity to be apart of! Viewing the photos, was an experience I will never be able to explain. I realized you don't have to be a size 0, 20 years old, or have a flat stomach to be sexy. I am IN LOVE with my photos, and show them to everyone without hesitation!"

I love getting to work with woman of all ages, body types and personalities. I see the same thing in each one. As the session goes on the confidence grows and the poses become more natural and the ladies just get to feel amazing about themselves! There is still room for our event on March 18th!

Massachusetts Boudoir Portrait Photographer | How it all started

I was trying to remember recently how I got into shooting boudoir portraits. Then I started to laugh remembering a close friend of mine telling me that on her next visit to Boston she wanted me to take "sexy pictures" of her. Of course I had no clue what she meant but I said "Let's do it!" So I started to try to find out what she was talking about. This was before Pinterest made it super easy! I started looking around on the internet and was shocked to find this was really a thing! There were photographers shooting half naked woman all over the place! I just had no idea. I was excited to try it out!

Fast forward a few weeks and my tiny little friend gets off a train with a ginormous suitcase full of stuff for her "sexy pictures". I think I remember that she had completely forgotten to pack actual clothes! There just wasn't room, this was happening and it was happening BIG!

Back then I didn't have a studio and the only time we were going to see each other was at our friends (girls only) Christmas party. The friend that was hosting the party had two small children that were going to be home at any time but it was going down! A funny twist is that my amazing makeup artist that I use today was in charge of doing her hair and makeup for the pictures. This was before she was doing this professionally and also after quite a few drinks, we were at a party after all!

So in the middle of the living room the suitcase opens, lingerie and accessories everywhere and full beauty salon is happening in the dining room. Our friends filled in around us laughing and having girl talk. Hours later she was READY! We moved on into the toy room. Yes, I said toy room. After moving toys and sprawling her across the floor we moved back to the dining room, hoping the husband and kids weren't going to walk in. Then we took it to the stairs. Never once did it occur to me to pose her on a chair or the couch, then again her suitcase explosion would have been hard to hide. We really did have a ball, I had absolutely no clue what I was doing but I know I wanted to do it again! And so did she!

Our take two was a few months later, only this time my same makeup artist, Izabelle Ohannessian, and I road tripped it to her home in New Jersey. She got 8 other ladies to take part and we shot them over a 2 day period. It was amazing!! I was finding a grove and really loving the entire vibe of the house. Just back to back woman getting their hair and makeup done and moving from room to room of this beautiful home sprawling across furniture like they owned the place! The confidence was contagious! It was one of the best times I have ever had with my photography. We did this trip twice. Then next time was even more amazing! A house full of beautiful woman who came in all scared and left oozing with confidence!

We then started to do sessions at my home. I would get rid of the husband and kids and move furniture around, but this time actually posing the ladies on my couches, in my bathroom. We had a blast! We would laugh because I had a home daycare at the time so we would shoot on a Sunday then I would have a house full of kids the next day eating cheerios in the same spot I had a woman in her lace thong with her legs up on my dining room wall!

A month or so later Christine McSheehy contacted me because she had seen my work. She was a salon owner in Somerville, Hair by Christine & Co, and wondered if we wanted to shoot boudoir portraits at her salon. She didn't have to ask me twice! We set up marathons and shot there for years! It was beyond amazing! I really loved everything about it! You would have never known the images were shot at a hair salon either! We made it work, complete with my fake headboard backdrop and bed set up! So glad I don't have to use that anymore, but it was great back then!

I think when I opened my home studio I just could't envision making my space work for kids and boudoir so I took break from it to focus on kids and families. But recently it has just been calling me. So much that one night at 11pm I started ripping everything out of my studio, a week later it was repainted and totally redesigned. I am so proud of my space. I see it growing into a full time boudoir portrait studio and I am excited for this next chapter in my photography journey.

Boston Boudoir Portrait Session | Tara Starr Photography at The Swan Boudoir Studio

I love everything about Boudoir Portrait Sessions! I would scream it from the roof tops if I could! I recently decided to start to transition my business to make sure I have more of these amazing, empowering sessions in my life! I redid my studio creating the perfect atmosphere for an intimate portrait session to match any woman's comfort level. These sessions aren't just about what you are (or aren't) wearing. Really they could be done in jeans and a tee shirt with the same amazing results. They are about really letting your guard down and pushing yourself to allow your confidence to shine through. We as woman are just so critical of ourselves at all times. We never have enough time to really focus on feeling sexy and beautiful because we feel guilty doing anything for ourselves.

My beauty team and I get to see our Swans come into the studio and enjoy the entire process from start to finish. Walking in, we see nerves and anxiety, then as they go from the makeup chair to the hair stylist and then int their first wardrobe selection they are slowly coming out of their shell as we start the session already feeling confident and beautiful. By the 2nd outfit they are ROCKING the session and by the time it's over they are a completely different person from the gal that walked in! It really is AMAZING to see.

This gorgeous lady was no different! We had so much fun during her session! My first session since setting up my new space. I am so excited to shoot more of these sessions and help woman find their confidence and see they are more than just whoever they see in the mirror on a daily basis.

And although I LOVE when our Swans let us share their images, it is totally ok to do a session and not have your pictures shown to anyone but you, so no worries about that. But thank you Miss F for letting us share some!

I absolutely LOVE Boudoir Portrait Sessions!!!!! So much, that I am planning a big shift in my business in 2018. I want to focus on these amazing portrait sessions and have already started to redo my studio (again since these were taken) to make an even more special place for woman to come, relax, let their guard down and spoil themselves. To really feel beautiful in their own skin. The day this gorgeous gal was here we had 3 awesome ladies in the studio. One in her 20's, one in her 30's and one in her 40's. All different shapes and sizes and all so incredibly beautiful inside and out! My beauty team and I witnesses and entire day of total strangers supporting each other and telling each other how amazing and beautiful they looked. All of these woman totally rocked their sessions! Massachusetts Senior Portrait Photographer | Senior Session at Bancroft's Castle Groton

I LOVE shooting seniors!!! I won't lie, boys are usually kind of tough! They are not senior girls who love getting their pictures taken. I always have to promise to be as fast as possible and make it as pain free as it can be. Well this kid was a different story! He brought wardrobe changes and was willing to do anything I asked him to do! Even his beautiful girlfriend got in on the fun! This location is awesome and my subjects are adorable. Maybe it's because he's so used to the routine by now. He's always a pleasure to photograph and I have loved getting to see this young man grow up. I can only hope my son will grow to be just like him, back tucks, toe touches and all! Tate, I have no doubt you will change the world some day!!

Custom Photography Vs Chain Studios | Tara Starr Photography

I have had several discussions lately on this topic. What is custom photography? And of course pricing always comes into the discussion. First, let me say that before I started doing this I had NO CLUE what went into running a portrait business. None. And why would I have? I don't know what goes into running most businesses and unless you are doing the work yourself you just have no clue. Zero. Even if you think you do, you don't. I do however know exactly what goes into running my portrait business now after learning every single thing the hard way. But finally, after a lot of blood, sweat and tears I have a good idea of what needs to be done if you want to be in business and STAY in business.

Custom photography- Now, I am not bashing the high volume chain studios. There is something for everyone and you get what you pay for. MY kids pictures were taken at them when they were little!

Think of it like this, there is McDonalds and there is that fancy stake house that takes months to get reservations. There are purses you buy at Target and there are COACH bags. There is Supercuts and there is that stylist on Newbury Street who books a year in advance. People spend money on the things that they value. They save (or charge) what they value and want. I mean everyone has $500 cell phone these days. They don't NEED it, they want it. 10 year olds have them. (And you have to replace them every 2 years or so.)

So with the bigger price tag, you get more. The service, atmosphere, 1 on 1 attention is what you should be getting when you pay more right? A higher quality item and a better experience. I mean no one is grabbing lunch at BK and raving about the experience. But they aren't going out of business anytime soon right? Because you got what you paid for, what you expected.

So back to this pertaining to custom photography. If you want a custom experience from start to finish you shouldn't expect that at Target Portrait studios. You should expect cute snapshots of your kids, an in and out visit where they shoot, you pick and they print them. Boom done. Easy and cheap, or not so easy and maybe your kids was screaming and it was 500000 degrees in there and it was rush rush rush and you hop you wound up with something. That sounds more like my experiences there anyway. But it was what I paid for.

So compare that to a custom portrait session. Step one, you talk to the portrait artist on the phone or even go to an in person consultation. You really get to know their personality before you are in front of their camera. You plan every single part of the session. The portrait artist should know exatly what you want to end up with in the end. Maybe a beautiful album, or a gallery wall to fill a spot in your home. You plan out gifts for other family members. You plan the wardrobe and the shooting location. You go back and forth on emails sending pictures of the outfits you have been trying to finalize. Or the portrait artist might even supply the perfect clothes for you, so they make time for you to come by and try stuff on.

Then the day of the session comes. You spend as much time as needed to get everything done that you want. There is no rush, no one is coming in after you after 20 minutes and you get whatever you get, this session is custmm just for you! After the session the portrait artist goes to work exporting, uploading, hand editing each image for your gallery. This could be up to 25 hours of work just editing alone. Then creating a slideshow for you, uploading them to a final gallery. Then there is a scheduled reveal session. You go to their studio or they travel to your home and set up a beautiful slideshow. Tears are almost always shed. You see your beautiful family in a way you might not ever have seen them before, or certainly in a way you don't often see each other. Then time is spent creating a custom art collection for you to have forever and then be passed down for generations. Not cheap prints that will yellow or fade in 10 years, I know because sadly mine have. These are archival quality art pieces for your walls. Finished items that will be hand delivered to you by the portrait artist. Possibly even hung up/installed by them as well (I don't do this as I don't trust myself with a hammer) So do you see the difference? Someone at one of those inexpensive chains is not putting in even close to the man hours or care that your custom portrait artist did, not to mention the training and talent you are also getting.

This is honestly just the tip of the iceberg of why custom photography is different and considered a luxury service. One that should be priced as such. I could really go on and on about it. But this gives you a little idea, something you may not have thought about before. I know I hadn't.

Organic Custom Portraiture | Tara Starr Photography

Hi everyone! For 2017 I have decided on a major style and editing shift in my portrait studio. This has been a long time coming for me and I finally am getting it done! For a while now I have really admired a natural and pure style. No props, no distractions, no busy clothing, no loud colors. Just a simple and conducive overall theme to an artists work. Where any images you see would be recognized that a certain artist produced them. I was feeling all over the place with no real branding to my work. I have decided to bring Organic Portraiture into my studio. I want the finished product to really show the connection between family members. To have the images scream nothing but emotion and love between the people I am photographing. I am really embracing the styling and editing changes that come with this style of portraiture. I am looking forward to my work being recognizable, to my website screaming just one style that attracts the right clients for me. I want to really stand out in an oversaturated market of family photographers.

Durning my research and training, I have learned that it's not so much about finding the perfect outfits for your family to be photographed in, but more about avoiding the WRONG outfits. I would look at my work and not even know why an image of a beautiful family was bothering me. I feel implementing this new style will avoid this from ever happening to me or my clients. I think it will make every image more special and polished. Really showcasing the true happiness of parents welcoming a new baby into their family or capturing your little ones just being themselves playing in a field with nothing busy around them at all.

I have made some beautiful changes in my studio, giving it a real cozy, natural feel. Nothing stuffy or cheesy. I want everyone to be relaxed just like they are in their own homes. Just on the floor interacting with each other while I capture special moments between parents/children/siblings. I want it to be real and no forced uncomfortable posing. A new baby in mom or dads hands, natural snuggles and kisses or silly giggles in a comfortable environment will allow me to capture true emotions that we all want to remember from these sweet days of childhood.

I will still shoot in a few of my favorite locations but I am most excited about adding field sessions to my program. Outside sessions will take place about 2 hours before sundown when the sun is at it's sweet spot. Golden hour creates such a unique look and feel to your images. I have learned that you can't just shoot any time of the day and get the same results you are trying for, so it's important to get out there when the sun is just right.

I have also learned a new editing style to make my images super creamy and give them an extra dream like feel. A solid style change to everything that comes out of my studio.

I am also excited to offer a wardrobe selection for mammas, babies and children. (One less thing to stress out about when planning your session) I am still working on building my closet up and maybe eventually I will have some stuff in there for dads, but let's be real, they are super easy to shop for!

I will really guide my clients when it comes to styling. I am making this a top priority to be able to produce the results I think will wow and amazing my clients. Another adorable Holiday Session in the studio! This was one for the books! I think it was my 3rd time working with these cuties, and little miss Ava (middle child) has always let me know just how she feels about me and my camera, lol. Well this time she was a ROCK STAR!!! Little bro Owen too!! And of course big sister Sara was always easy :)

We had so much fun! I even got a smile from Ava when I saw her a week later!

Boston Family Photographer | Extra Special Family Session in Concord, Ma

What a fun family session on a gorgeous New England day! What personalities on these little munchkins! They certainly kept me on my toes, and laughing throughout the session!
I have had the pleasure of working with this sweet family once before and getting to know mom through Facebook over the last 2 years. This passed year I followed her third pregnancy on Facebook, all the posts that reminded me of when I carried my babies. Posts about ice cream cravings and being ready to pop. The posts towards the end when you just keep waiting to see the one that say's the baby is here.

Just four months ago one of those post pop up that takes your breath away. Instead of announcing the birth of their daughter, they had to announce to the world that they lost their sweet baby girl. Born still for really no reason after a perfectly wonderful, healthy pregnancy. A post where your eyes fill up and your heart breaks and you just have to stop whatever you are doing.

In the time since their devastating loss, I have seen such inspirational posts from a beautiful mom who refuses to let the world forget that her angel baby was in fact here on this earth and will always be a part of their family. Having to deal with such a life changing event as adults is hard enough but it also had to be explained to their 2 small children who were excited about having a new baby sister. I have been nothing but inspired by how she is keeping Lainey Nora alive in everyone's hearts, including mine.

During our session the kids happily toted around "Lainey Bear" and telling me all about their sister. My heart was exploding knowing that these beautiful children will always remember that they do have a sister that is always with them.

Mom gave me permission to share a post from her Facebook page this morning. I hope you take the time to read it and it makes you stop and appreciate all you have in your world and that it inspires you as it did me......

"It’s crazy to think how four months have gone by so quickly. It went from the heat of summer to the cold and the colors of fall in a blink of an eye. It’s crazy how my day to day life hasn’t really changed. I’m still getting the kids ready for school, bringing them to activities, the four of us still have dinner together every night. I still use “the four of us” because even though we’re five, you’re not here with us physically and it just comes out. And it's weird. I know that you’re with us in whatever we do and wherever we go. We bring Lainey Bear to all the important stuff, but usually it’s the four of us. I try and include you throughout my day wherever I can - instead of my name, I give yours at Starbucks, I talk to you all the time, I wear your initial on my neck, and the jewelry people gave me to remember you. I still catch my breath when I see an adorable outfit that I can’t buy for you. I still stumble when people ask how many children I have, and I dread the thought of running into people I haven’t talked to yet. But my everyday life hasn’t changed that much, even though it’s been picked up, shaken around and put back together completely differently. I try and focus on the good you bring to my life instead of being sad that you’re not here. I pray more. I notice sunsets more and the colors of the clouds. I know when you’re with me or when you help me with something. I focus on trying to be a good parent to Aislyn and Liam instead of getting annoyed when it becomes too much. I try and remember to be patient when we’re leaving the house because I’ll never get to bring you to school or run you around to 150 different activities. I try and give gentle reminders to them instead of yelling because I won’t be able to pick up all your clothes and toys all over the house. I try to not get annoyed that there are clothes and toys and markers spread throughout the house all the time. I try and make them eat fruits and veggies instead of mac and cheese every night, because I can’t make homemade baby food and freeze it in ice cube trays for you, like I did for them. I am trying to be a better person because of you and for you.
So even though you’re not here, you are with me every minute of every day, and I thank God that he allowed you to stop by and remind me of what's important. I love you."

Boston Massachusetts Photographer | Family Beach Session

My last beach portrait session of the season always makes me sad. This one was at a new beach for me and that's always fun! Theis session was in Nahant, MA and the rocks were just perfect! Although the place was gorgeous and super picturesque, it may have been just too exciting for little ones. These cutie pies were way more interested in running around on the cool rocks than sitting and posing for me. I can't say that I blame them! But we still managed to get gorgeous shots that this beautiful family will have forever to remember just how exciting it was to have their pictures taken when they were little! Mom and Dad may or may not have needed a drink when we were done, hehehe. I always say "The kids are in charge!" Ahhhh, to be 3, 2 or almost 1 year old again!

I enjoy taking pictures of teens so much! I have yet to meet a teenage girl that doesn't love having her picture taken! Always so much fun! This day out in Boston with these beautiful cousins and their stunning friend was no different! It was HOT and super sunny and that always brings challenges when taking pictures but we still had so much fun and got in lots of exercise while roaming the city! And it was also nice to get in some Auntie time with these kids I don't get to see near enough! :)
I would LOVE to shoot more "Best Friend Sessions" like these. These years are such a wonderful time in a girls life!

So every now and then a photographer/mom needs to photograph her own children! I prepare the kids for WEEKS for this. Talk about how quick we can be, a prize they can get at the end and of course, how well they are going to behave. I pick the perfect outfits, well as perfect as I can manage because now that they are older they have their own opinions on their clothes, sigh. But once more bribery has ensued, we are ready! I drive to the well planned out location, and here we go! We just never know how it will actually go! Well the last 2 times my girl was the tough one so of course this time she is an angel and the boy was trouble. We got it done, with some struggles and eye rolls of course and just in time before the rain started. My God it is just never easy. As promised, they were allowed to bring home some crabs and snails from the beach. Not a great idea, by the way. Anyway, they are lucky they are cute!
